Bug Hunting and Science Fair
Wild About Perton joined Perton Library to celebrate the BBC's Wild Day Out event by supporting bug hunting in the wildlife garden . It was a great success with many children enjoying the activity and a great many bugs were found including 4 species of ladybird , a variety of bees , spiders , beetles ,snails and flying insects.
Many thanks to Perton Library for inviting us to join their recent Science Fair . It was an amazing event thoroughly enjoyed by all . The door count was over 700 ! We hope they'll be another one next year .
Pond Dipping and Water Surveys
The Pond Dipping events were well attended and included joining OPAL for water surveys of Upper Lake , Lower Lake and the Penk . Lower Lake was found to be of high quality and had a good range of invertebrates . For full details of the surveys check out the OPAL website.
Dawn Chorus Walk
24 brave souls turned out at 4:30am to witness the delights of the Dawn Chorus .
Many thanks to Theresa Dorrance , a bird song expert from the RSPB ,who made the event extremely enjoyable , helping to identify the bird song that overwhelmed us .
Thanks to Yvonne for opening the library before 7am so we could relax with coffee and muffins and discuss the birds we'd heard .
And thanks to everyone who turned up ..... we hope to see you again next year !
Here's a short list of some of the birds we heard .... blackbird , robin , song thrush , chiffchaff , blue tit , great tit , tawny owl , dunnock , wren , sparrow , black cap , chaffinch ... and many more .
WEBSITE ...sorry but we're having problems with some pages of our website . Everything you need to know will be on the News Page or Events Page while we try to sort it out . Thanks .

SPRINGWATCH FESTIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS
Perton Springwatch Festival held on March 27th at Perton Library has been hailed a great success !
The weather was kind , the stalls , displays , activities and events were exciting , fun and informative .... and by the end of the day the visitor count was just over 800 !
Many , many thanks to all the organisations who took part , to the library for hosting the festival and providing refreshments and to the 800+ visitors who came and joined in .... we hope to see everyone back next year for Springwatch 2011.
January - March 2010
Look out for the Water Rail on Upper Lake near the boardwalk , he is quite a rarity for these parts apparently . He can be seen most days preening and hunting for food . Keep your eyes open for a Little Grebe which has started to visit Upper Lake . Also 2 heron have been seen catching frogs over the far side of the lake . Otherwise it's just the "usual suspects" pairing up and making a lot of noise about it !
The pochard can been seen on Upper Lake most days now and the Great Crested Grebe has made several visits , so be on the lookout . The black headed gulls are finally getting their black heads as Spring approaches and on occasion we have had up to 5 swans checking the lake out .
Please remember , if you are feeding the wildfowl on the lakes try not to give them white bread ! Thanks .
The Winter Wildlife Walk on January 9th was a great success . The weather was snowy and the sun was shining ! The countryside views were spectacular and despite the cold everyone enjoyed identifying animal tracks in the snow and looking out for Winter birds . Thanks to everyone who came .
The recent cold snap and snowy weather has made Perton the place to go bird watching ! Look out for Fieldfare and Redwing as well as flocks [ or charms ] of Goldfinches around Upper and Lower Lake , Bluebell Walk and Penk Meadow . Also keep your eyes open for flocks of Long - tailed tits doing the rounds .
On Upper Lake you may be lucky enough to catch sight of a Pochard and our resident Heron as well as all the "usual suspects".
